Grafton’s Mayor, Michael R. Morrow, Retired US Army colonel and his wife Lynn visited France at the 70th and 75th D-Day Commemorations on Omaha Beach, Normandie. They saw firsthand and walked the beaches where those soldiers landed, and they traversed the cliffs those Rangers climbed. As the French say, “Never Forget.”
In 2022, Mayor Morrow had a vision as he and Lynne were driving by the magnificent Grafton bluffs. They were talking about their trip to France when Morrow looked at the cliffs and said, “Pointe du Hoc!” Since that time the Grafton War Memorial Commission formed the National Memorial of Military Ascent (NMMA) a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that is leading a comprehensive veterans memorial project.
Located on bluffs overlooking the Great River Road in Illinois, this one-of-a-kind monument will emulate the historic Pointe du Hoc, site of one of the most courageous Allied assaults during World War II. The dramatic cliff-side setting will offer a poignant backdrop for quiet reflection and remembrance. The memorial’s elegant design features larger-than-life bronze statues of Army Rangers ascending the bluffs. This powerful imagery honors all our servicemen and women who have fought to protect our freedoms throughout history. We envision this site as a profound place of learning that connects visitors with our military past. Exhibits will share details of D-Day and other pivotal battles. Veterans and families will have space for ceremonies and gatherings. Visitors can gain a perspective on the sacrifices made to preserve liberty.
